2024 Jeju Air Crash: South Korea Parliament Gives Green Signal for Investigation

The parliament of South Korea has given the green signal to launch an independent investigation into the Jeju Air plane crash.

A panel consisting of 18 members of parliament will probe the matter and will unearth the causes of the airplane crash. The parliament gave the green signal for the investigation on Monday.

This deadliest crash involving a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 occurred in December 2024 and claimed 179 precious lives.

The independent panel will probe the possible causes of the plane crash. It will also examine the possible chances of a bird strike, mechanical or engine failure, or an embankment hit during the runway overrun.

The bill says that the investigation will also examine whether any government agencies carried out a cover-up during the official investigation.

Though the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board has not released its final report yet, its interim report released in January stated that the aircraft’s two engines sustained bird strikes.

However, experts said that the embankment at the end of the runway, which supports airport navigation equipment, did not meet global standards.

Now, after the green signal given by parliament, an independent probe will be conducted, and the root cause of the horrific aircraft crash needs to be identified and addressed globally.

Many factors contribute to most air accidents, and the independent probe will surely reveal the root causes and fix accountability, whether any infrastructural error or any mechanical, engine, or embankment-related issue contributed to the crash that took 179 lives.
